Surveying & Engineering Career Paths

Civil Engineers and Land Surveyors are professions that plan and design infrastructure that improves the quality of people’s lives and promotes commerce and economic growth, by providing improved transportation access, extending services from water and waste water utilities, proper management of storm drainage and floodplains, and helping clients address challenges faced when looking to build, expand, or develop in a cost-effective, environmentally-responsible manner, while complying with local, state, and federal regulations.
The type of careers involved with this work ranges from working on the earliest stages of a project to define impacts and costs of a proposed project, helping to identify and acquire the land to complete a project, to being in the field making sure a project is being constructed according to the plans and specifications. Positions are generally full-time and include benefits – health insurance, 401k, tuition assistance, and paid vacation. Firms often hire student interns, usually during the busy summer months, which could lead to becoming a full-time employee.
