ES&S provided planning and design services for two roadways that will provide relief to increased traffic congestion in the Peachtree Commercial District and Nifong Boulevard related to a variety of factors, including: increased traffic at Rock Bridge High School, access management measures that reduced the number of left-turn movements in the area, and ongoing development on the Nifong corridor. Multiple alternatives were evaluated, with a preferred alternative that includes a new road, Aurora Drive, west of Peachtree Drive; two roundabouts and a short roadway, Nova Way, connecting Aurora at the intersection of Peachtree Drive and Peach Court; and a signalized intersection at Aurora and Nifong.
An extension of this project was proposed by Columbia Public Schools (CPS) to relieve congestion of students arriving and departing the Rock Bridge High School campus to the south. Approximately 1000-LF of roadway extending to the south of the Aurora Drive roundabout provides a connection to the high school’s north parking lot and the Columbia Area Career Center. The contract was administered by CPS, with ES&S providing coordination between the two projects and owners.
