New Hall – Academic & Residential Facility

About the Project

ES&S provided full site design services for the new 60,000-sf, four-story, academic and residence hall for Columbia College. The first floor of the facility houses the Robert W. Plaster School of Business, consisting of offices, six classrooms and a larger event center.  The second, third and fourth floors will contain a 150-bed student dormitory.

Design services included site layout and full civil engineering and design-support services for the new building.  Specific design features included property surveys, site layout of building and parking, grading, drainage, erosion and sediment control, and utility connections.  The subsurface investigation included extensive mapping and coordination due to the relocation of existing utilities for the building site, which is in the heart of the college’s main campus.  ES&S also provided calculations necessary permitting documentation regarding the impacts of the new construction relative to the campus’ regional storm water detention and water quality facilities, which were constructed as part of a campus-wide storm water master plan completed by the firm in 2011.  There was also a feasibility study completed to determine the most efficient connection to the City’s sanitary sewer system, followed by design of a new pump station and force main.

Construction-support services included construction surveys and layout, observation of foundation construction and reinforcing steel, and quality assurance testing for construction materials, steel connections, and fireproofing materials.
