Nifong Boulevard Corridor Improvements

About the Project

ES&S provided design services for widening and upgrades to a 7750-LF segment of Nifong Blvd., a major E/W arterial roadway serving the high-growth area of south Columbia.  The existing roadway consists of a five-lane segment through a commercial corridor, dropping to a two-lane section as the road continues west into mostly residential neighborhoods.  A traffic study was performed which showed traffic demand growth through 2040 causing a total delay increase of 400% and increase in total stops of over 200% in both the AM and PM.  Recommendations were to widen the roadway to two-lanes in each direction, with a center turn-lane along portions of the corridor, reconstruction of two signalized intersections at Bethel and Forum, the addition of a traffic signal and implementation of access management on the east-side commercial road segment, and improvements to multi-modal accessibility.

Other issues on the project include several creek crossings under the roadway, coordination with MoDOT (the east terminus is MO Route 163), two public schools that are major traffic generators, and the Country Club of Missouri on the west end.  There are major utilities along the corridor, including a 24-inch diameter water transmission main and a proposed 161-kV electric transmission line in addition to the existing overhead distribution lines.  ES&S also prepared documentation for the acquisition of new ROW/easement for over 80 parcels on the corridor.
