Site Design for New John Warner Middle School

About the Project

ES&S provided initial site selection consulting, site planning and design, and construction-support services for a new 126,500-sf middle school facility in southwest Columbia with capacity for 700-800 students.  Over 20 sites were screened, with the 60-acre greenfield site selected to ultimately be home to the new middle school and a future CPS facility, with a portion transferred to the City’s Parks & Recreation Department for development of a future park.

The grading plan accommodated the building, separate access drives for buses and vehicles, onsite parking, football/track facilities, and a future building site.  ES&S facilitated a variance with the City for the over 400 parking spaces, distributing them in three separate lots that offered improved circulation and storm water quality benefits  Additional features included design of several hundred feet of new sidewalk to connect a nearby subdivision, decel & turn-lane along Sinclair Road, storm drainage and water quality facilities, new sewer and water lines, coordination with City of Columbia on future roadway improvements planned for Sinclair Road south of the project, and identification of significant trees and climax forest in accordance with UDC requirements.

Construction-support services included construction surveys and layout, observation of foundation construction and reinforcing steel, and quality assurance testing for construction materials, steel connections, and fireproofing materials.  ES&S was a subconsultant to the prime architect, PWArchitects, for the site design services, and worked directly with CPS for the site selection study.
